It was an online test of 50 mins hosted on hackerearth consisting of 2 coding questions.
First question:- Given a string of size n consisting of 0s and 1s only. Find the max no of continuous 1s after the string is flipped k times.
Second question:- It was also on string & of moderate level.

18 students were shortlisted for further rounds.

Stage-3

Technical Interview Round 1
In this round I was asked some coding questions of different levels.
Some of them were:-
1. Given a set of n nuts of different sizes and n bolts of different sizes. There is a one-one mapping between nuts and bolts. Match nuts and bolts efficiently.
Constraint: Comparison of a nut to another nut or a bolt to another bolt is not allowed. It means a nut can only be compared with a bolt and a bolt can only be compared with a nut to see which one is bigger/smaller.
2. Given that integers are being read from a data stream. Find median of all the elements read so far starting from the first integer till the last integer. This is also called Median of Running Integers. The data stream can be any source of data, for example: a file, an array of integers, input stream etc.

Technical Interview Round 2
In this round I was asked some coding and technical questions. I was also asked some questions like:- “Rate yourself in coding on a scale of 0 to 10 ?” Some java related questions like:- Write a simple java program printing “hello world” and explain each and every word written in that program. One question was on chocolate distribution problem. He gave me the opportunity to ask some questions to him. I asked him, “what is the amount of time employees work and what kind of work is there in your company and I have heard that the work in your company is repetitive, etc ”.

Stage-4

HR Interview Round
In this round he asked me to brief my resume in non-technical terms, my hobbies, etc. It was an amazing interactive round due to my hobby in politics and cricket. He asked me to tell something about myself outside of my resume. “Why do I want to join DE Shaw?” “If not DE Shaw then what?” “Your end goal?” “Why should we select you?”. Some questions related to DE Shaw “What kind of work they do?” “What is DESIS?” I was given time to ask questions.

Results

2 students including me got selected for the internship role at DE Shaw.

Suggestion/Tips :-
→  If you know any questions beforehand don’t directly jump to the solution. Go step by step from the brute force !!
→ They want to see how you approach the problem so if you don’t know the exact solution it’s okay.
→ Be confident in HR round on your opinion as they will try to make you change it. Make it as interactive as possible.
→ Ask questions to interview whenever given an opportunity. Show your interest in the company.
→ Do your research on the company before the interview and listen carefully in the ppts.
